Catholic Church: 70 years of widespread priest abuse in PA

A Pennsylvania grand jury reports: Child abuse by over 300 priests of at least 1,000 victims was systematically covered up by bishops and other leaders of the Catholic Church in 6 of 8 dioceses across the state, making this the biggest report of abuse in the history of the church.

  • The report suggests there may be thousands more unidentified victims.
  • The FBI reviewed the evidence from the grand jury and concluded the Church had followed a “playbook” to sidestep their responsibility, moving priests around when they became problems, keeping information from parishioners–doing everything they could to protect each other and the institution.
  • The report also details two new cases of abuse even as the Catholic Church defends itself as having made changes aimed at being more transparent.
