
A self-driving Uber car struck and killed a 49-year-old woman in Tempe, Arizona. She was walking her bike outside a crosswalk. The crash is still under investigation but it’s thought that the vehicle never applied its breaks.
- In response, Uber took its self-driving cars off the roads in the four cities where they have been testing them.
- Big-name automakers, like General Motors and Toyota, and tech giants Uber and Alphabet, Inc., are dropping billions of dollars in the technology.
- At the same time, Waymo, Alphabet’s self-driving car division, announced that over the next two years it would put 20,000 vehicles into use.
