Free for all at work: all you can eat is no longer just at Golden Corral

The perennial need to attract, keep and motivate talent has led companies to provide free food for employees, once seen as a perk reserved for squeezing out a few extra hours from overworked institutional bankers.

  • While some companies provide their own product to employees (three free pints of Ben & Jerry’s is available to employees every day), others (like Facebook) bring in fresh cuisine and professional chefs for three, free meals a day.
  • The practice has met with criticism as local businesses have worked toward banning free cafeterias in order to increase traffic to their restaurants.
