Did climate change intensify Harvey?

Stanford professors are trying to answer the question: did climate change make Hurricane Harvey more severe?

Researchers know:

  • ocean temps have warmed
  • the level of the ocean has risen

They will try to answer the question:

  • did these oceanic changes contribute to the length and severity of the storm?

Researchers know:

  • the atmosphere is warmer
  • and it’s holding more moisture

They will try to answer the question:

  • Did these atmospheric changes have an effect on rainfall amounts?

Researchers know:

  • the path the storm took was unusual

They will try to answer the question:

  • Is global warming linked to the path the storm took?
