Qatar is an oil-rich country with plenty of money to build stadiums.
Hosting the world cup is a notably expensive endeavor and not one that generates profit for the host country. This won’t be a problem for this wealthy country.
Qatar has the opportunity to be the first Arab country to host the world cup.
Had you ever heard of Qatar? Me either. The World Cup could put Qatar on the map.
Almost a dozen stadiums need to be built, which means lots of employment options.
The World Cup should not be played in Qatar.
Reports have surfaced over worker abuse and exploitation. For example, Qatari employers can take a worker’s passport and bar them from changing jobs.
And, over 1,200 workers have reportedly died while working on this project.
Bahrain, Egypt, Saudi Arabia, United Arab Emirates, Yemen and Maldives all cut diplomatic ties with Qatar because they believe Qatar is supporting Islamist terrorist groups.
In Qatar alcoholic drinks are forbidden and modest dress is mandated. Will this cause a problem with the influx of foreign visitors?
