Justice Kennedy is retiring from the U.S. Supreme Court, which means President Trump can nominate someone to replace him. Throughout his campaign, Trump vowed to overturn abortion rights through his Court appointments.
The candidate he chose is Judge Brett Kavanaugh.
- Judge Kavanaugh is the author of almost 300 judicial opinions, written over 12 years, from which analysts can determine his position on issues.
- Kavanaugh is also a long-time Washington insider who was an aggressive prosecutor on the Ken Starr investigation of Bill Clinton, that led to the former president’s impeachment—but who has had a change of heart. He now believes presidents should not be subjected to investigations because they are “time consuming and distracting.”
- He 53 years old.
why the nominee matters
A conservative court may be more likely to overturn landmark cases, and Roe v. Wade, which legalized abortion in the U.S., is among the most talked about.
