President Trump ordered the withdrawal of U.S. troops from Syria, without consulting his national-security team or with U.S. allies, and over the objections of his top aids.
According to the AP press, Trump committed to the action while on a phone call with Turkey’s President Erdogan.
The announcement stunned the world. Defense Secretary General James Mattis resigned, citing philosophical differences in policy.
A sudden withdrawal could allow the resurgence of ISIS, it empowers Russia and Iran, endangers our Turkish allies, exacerbates a humanitarian crisis, and enables a dictator who uses chemical weapons on his own people to remain in power.
It also ends a Syria policy that has been disastrous from the beginning.
